  •   The amazing day was on January 29, 2000. My fiancé (Darren) woke me up at 4:30 in the morning to get ready for a big adventure he had planned for us. He drove us out to a empty field and parked. I asked, "Where are we at and what are we doing here?" He said, "Just be patient." There were people pulling up in cars, and I asked, "Do you know these people?" He said, "No".

We got out of the car and I saw a big basket, which is used for hot air balloons. Right then I knew we were going for a balloon ride. My fiancé worked it so we could go up alone. I thought to myself, he is going to pop the question! Then, the balloon started to descend, and he didn't pop the question. A feeling of disappoint came over me, but I couldn't let the hope of a proposal ruin the day.

When we landed he asked me to go and put the coats in the car. I walked over to the car and opened the door, inside was a big sunflower on top of his clothes. I thought to myself maybe I wasn't suppose to see that. I didn't want to ruin his surprise, so I didn't say anything. Little did I know he wanted me to see the flower and the clothes, and was expecting me to say something. He was definitely confused as to why I didn't say anything.

We walked to the car and there was the flower and the clothes. He asked, "Where are your clothes?" I said,"They are at your house, let's go get them." He said, We are not going back home." We will have to go shopping for you." We ended up going to South Coast Plaza in Newport, CA. to go shopping .

We started to walk inside the mall when the valet parking man stopped me, and asked me, "Are you Melissa?" I said, "yes." He gave me two flowers. I went into Anne Kline, Banana Republic, Macy's, Victoria Secret, and Nordstrom's. At each store, a customer walked up to me to hand me a flower. I turned to Darren and asked, "Who do you have working for you?" He said, "I can't say." At Nordstrom's I tried on outfit after outfit. Each outfit I tried on, I would model it for Darren, until he found the one he really liked. I felt like Julia Roberts in the movie "Pretty Women" and Darren was Richard Gere sitting there with his cordless making phone calls. Then, we went to have lunch and from there Darren told me that I have an appointment at 2:30.

We took an escalator up to the second floor, I think. I forget which floor, but he walked me to a salon, where he had made me an appointment to get a manicure. I walked into the room where I was getting my manicure and there were three bride's magazines. Also there were more flowers, and he had video taped himself on his digital camera to leave a sweet message for me. Let's just say I felt like I was living a dream.

When I was done, he was waiting for me. We left the mall and he drove us to the Marriot hotel in Newport. He had gotten us a suite to get ready for our romantic evening. Needless to say, we finally got to take a nap before dinner. We had dinner reservations at the Rusty Pelican by the bay.

At our table there was a picture of me in front of the hot air balloon, more flowers, and more pictures of our day. Darren's brother and two of his good friends had followed us all day taking pictures and handing out the flowers. They really made our day very special. We ordered dinner which was fantastic! Then Darren said, "Let's go." He still didn't propose. I couldn't believe it! He takes me down to where all the boats are docked and I thought to myself this is it!

I saw a tiny boat with candles lit inside. I said, "Are we going for a gondola ride?" He just smiled. Inside the boat there were more flowers, champagne, and some Godiva chocolates. Joey, the man taking us for a ride, told us the history of the gondola and put a blanket across our laps. We went for a ride, and about 15 minutes into the ride I spotted a bottle in the water. Joey asked me to get the bottle out of the water.

At that moment I thought, my ring is inside that bottle. I looked inside and there was a beautiful message from my future husband. In the middle of the letter I started to cry. At the end of the letter it said to touch my hand to the water. I touched my hand to the water and a scuba diver, who was my fiancé's friend from work, popped out of the water. I screamed.

In his hands there was a little treasure box. I grabbed the box and inside the box were my rings shinny and new. Before he could say Melissa will you marry, I was already shouting, "Yes, yes." On top of the bridge, his family and all his close friends were shouting, "We love you!" His friends and family met us back at our hotel and had desert and champagne waiting for us. That is how my love proposed to me.
